LA GRANDE — Malheur County’s only varsity swimmer continued to dominate the competition, as Nyssa senior Nathan Esplin brought home two gold medals from the 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 2 Swimming Championship Friday at the La Grande Swim Club.
Esplin took first place in the 100-yard butterfly, setting a new district record time of 52.42 seconds. The previous district record was 52.52 seconds, set in 2016.
Esplin also took first place in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing in one minute, 46.36 seconds.
As a team, Nyssa came in sixth with 32 team points. La Grande ran away with the boys team title with 309 points.
Esplin won state championships in two events as a junior (2017-2018 was Nyssa’s first year with a swim team). Esplin won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 51.97 seconds. He also won the 200-yard freestyle, finishing in one minute, 44.32 seconds.
The 2018-2019 4A/3A/2A/1A Swimming State Championships will begin on Friday at the Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center.
