3 On this day in 2005, John G. Roberts, Jr. became the 17th chief justice of the United States Supreme Court. Roberts was appointed to the Court by former President George W. Bush following the retirement of Sandra Day O’Connor and the death of former Chief Justice William Rehnquist, according to Britannica.
