Student body president tells board that dress code ‘has taken away … self-expression’

McCain Middle School All-Student Body President Cody Smithies addresses the Payette School Board at its Jan. 13 meeting about the school district’s dress code.

PAYETTE — In January, McCain Middle School All-Student Body president Cody Smithies presented his findings in a survey of his peers regarding Payette School District’s Dress Code to the District Board of Trustees. Today, he is launching one that will enable everybody in town to weigh in.

Conducted by the McCain Student Council, the survey seeks the community’s input on the issue of the Payette School District Dress Code.

Specifically, the survey asks parents and guardians of Payette students about the following issues.

• Whether the dress code caused any financial issues;

• How difficult finding clothes that comply with the dress code really is; and

• Whether their students are getting more demerits than not.

With help from Cody’s teachers, the community has several ways to take the survey.

The survey is being made available from Feb. 11 to Feb. 21 beginning at 9 p.m. Individuals who do not have access to an online device and wish to take the survey, can do so at the the McCain Computer Lab from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 14, Feb. 17 and Feb. 19.
