BAKER CITY — Multiple crashes and adverse weather have forced officials to close the westbound lanes of Interstate 84 between exit 302 at Baker City and exit 216, six miles east of Pendleton today.
Multiple vehicle crashes are reported around the Poverty Flats area, near milepost 223, according to an update from Oregon Department of Transportation.
Dense fog and snowy conditions are reported there.
The closure began this morning in La Grande, but has moved to Baker City do to no more safe areas for trucks to park in La Grande.
Emergency crews have been working to remove crashed vehicles, injured motorists and get stranded traffic down from the mountain pass.
ODOT officials are hopeful to open the freeway within the next couple hours, but travelers are advised to wait until the route is open.
Motorists are urged to be prepared for winter conditions on alternative routes if those are used, and it is reported that U.S. 30 between Haines and North Powder is closed and not available as an alternate.

A followup would help as this was yesterday (and I'm glad I wasn't on my bike when he big slushy burst hit us) but if you need updated road conditions call 511.
Thank you for the ICYMI update, however the phone numbers/links to road information and emergency providers if necessary should always be included in stories like this.
