Man dies after U-Haul hits semi

A Uhaul truck sits in a field after it was struck by a semi on State Route 201 North, at the east end of Ontario, on Thursday morning.

ONTARIO — A Washington man driving U-Haul with a loaded car dolly collided with a semi truck on Thursday morning while he was attempting to cross the Yturri Beltline off Northwest Fourth Avenue.

According to a news release from Oregon State Police, emergency personnel responded to the crash at about 11:18 a.m. on State Route 201 North and Northwest Fourth Avenue at the east end of Ontario.

After a preliminary investigation, police say Jimmie Cavaness, 71, of Centrailia, Washington was driving east on Northwest Fourth Avenue. While attempting to cross the Beltline, police say it is unknown why, Cavaness pulled out in front of the semi.

The semi was a 2007 Kenworth tractor and lowboy equipment driven by Nicholas Kotek, 34, of Meridian. Kotek was driving south on the Beltline and approaching the intersection at Northwest Fourth Avenue.

The semi collided with the driver’s side door of the U-Haul, according to the news release.

Cavaness died at the scene; Kotek was uninjured.

Investigators are looking at failure to obey a stop sign on the part of Cavaness as a possible contributing factor in the crash, according to police.

State Police were assisted by Ontario Police Department, Ontario Fire Department, Treasure Valley Paramedics and ODOT.
