Ortega closes college career with honors

Payette alumna HarLee Ortega closed her college track and field career with a strong showing at the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships on May 25.

The Central Washington University senior finished 11th place at nationals, with 4,904 points and a Second Team All-American nod. This is the third time Ortega was named an All-American in college.

Ortega finished the first day of nationals in tenth place with a 1.64-meter (five foot, 4.5 inch) high jump (third place) and a shot put throw of 10.21m (33-06) or ninth place.

She also finished the 100-meter hurdles in 15.08 seconds (11th place) and the 200-meter dash in 26.27 seconds (10th place).

On day two of the tournament, Ortega finished 12th in the long jump, finishing with 5.19m (17-0.50). She followed that up with a personal best javelin throw of 36.23 (118-10) for seventh place. Her final mark came in the 800-meter race, where she finished sixth in 2:24.30.

Ortega holds the school record for the heptathlon, pentathlon and the triple jump. This spring, she won the Greater Northwest Athletic Conference championship in the hepathlon, long jump, high jump and the 4x400-meter relay.
