For the second year in a row, the Fruitland volleyball team finished in the top eight of the gold pool in the Idaho Falls-based tournament this weekend. Fruitland and perennial 3A powerhouse Sugar-Salem were the only 3A teams to finish in the gold bracket.
The Grizzlies have been battling injuries left and right this season. Outside hitter Lilly Richins will miss the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury. Setter Chanlar O’Neil missed Thursday’s game against Parma with an injury and returned over the weekend for the tournament.
“It was such a great tournament for us after facing so much adversity,” Fruitland coach Rena Sitz said. “Losing your setter and outside after such a successful summer could have defeated us. But the girls showed they can battle regardless of the lineup.”
Against some of the toughest teams in the state, like 5A Rocky Mountain, the Grizzlies had three freshmen on the court, and Sitz said she was thrilled with the way they stepped up to the challenge.
“We’re still the Dream Team… just some battle scars,” Sitz said.
