Battling through some persistent rain, the Fruitland softball team was able to hold on to a late lead and pick up a big 5-3 win over visiting Vale on April 2.
After a couple of scoreless innings, the Grizzlies came alive in the bottom of the third inning. A single by Brigit Futter scored Bella Carbajal and a single by Kiana Husfloen scored Futter and Kobi Wheeler to give the Grizzlies a 3-0 lead.
Fruitland added to its total with Emily Farrow scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning and Grace Herrera scoring on an error in the bottom of the sixth to give Fruitland a 5-0 late lead.
The Vikings gave the Grizzlies a little scare in the top of the seventh inning. Lexi Cleaver got Vale on the scoreboard with a big double to score Gracee Jacobs. Then Lexy Rodgers hit a home run over the left field fence to score two. But that wasn’t enough to mount the comeback as Fruitland held on for the 5-3 win.
Husfloen led the Grizzlies at the plate with one hit and two RBIs. Futter had one hit, one RBI and scored once.
Bailey Stowe had a strong showing in the circle for the Grizzlies. Coming in for the later five innings, Stowe allowed six hits, walked four and struck out 11 batters. Phoebe McGrath pitched the first two innings, allowing no hits and one walk while striking out two.
The Grizzlies are currently sitting at 7-5 (1-1 SRV) and in third place in the SRV. Their big rematch with Payette will be on April 15. The Pirates took round one of their season series in a 10-6 win on March 19.
