The Lights are on and somebody is home! At least they will be in Payette from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 24th for the annual Lights On Afterschool Celebration.

The day is a national celebration of after school programs, a project spurred forward by the Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring that all children have access to quality, affordable after school programs.

The alliance salutes the many partners and programs who make this event a success, in particular, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and the thousands of 21st Century Community Learning Centers nationwide.

Idaho Power and the City of Payette are both supporting this event, with Mayor Jeff Williams signing a proclamation declaring Oct. 24, 2019, as Lights On Afterschool day in Payette. Community and school district leaders will be illuminating Lights on Afterschool by highlighting programs through community tour and open house featuring several out-of-school programs for the youth of Payette. These include 21st Century Community Learning Centers Kindergarten and Afterschool Programs at Payette Primary School, and Westside Elementary, Payette Public Library, Payette Boys and Girls Club, Payette City Pool, Payette 4H Extension Office, Boy Scouts of America, Payette Museum, and Idaho Power Education and Outreach.

Participants can start at any of five locations: Payette Primary, Westside Elementary, Boys & Girls Club, Payette Public Library, and Payette Museum, and are invited to ride the yellow school buses free of charge to all event locations.

At each stop they will have the opportunity to tour facilities and learn about exciting programs being offered in our community, see student displays, and participate in fun activities, from 3-D printing to make and take STEM activities sponsored by Idaho Public Television.

Every location will spotlight something different so participants will want to visit each one, and while there get a stamp on their passport. Each participant will receive a passport at their first stop, and everyone who gets every stamp filled on their passport will be entered in a drawing for a free prize.

Raffle prizes are being provided by each of 10 programs represented.
