Samaritan’s Purse will be collecting ‘shoebox’ gifts the week before Thanksgiving

The Samaritan’s Purse International Relief Organization is getting ready for its Operation Christmas Child shoebox gift drive. Volunteers will be collecting donations during National Collection Week, Nov. 18-25.

Anyone can pack a shoebox, according to Samaritan’s Purse: Individuals, families, churches and groups fill empty shoeboxes with school supplies, hygiene items and fun toys, such as dolls or soccer balls.

According to Media Relations Associate Donna Clayton, Samaritan’s Purse does this to help children feel God’s love at Christmas.

“The mission of Operation Christmas Child is to demonstrate Godís love in a tangible way to children in need around the world, and together with the local church worldwide, to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Since 1993 Operation Christmas Child has collected and delivered more than 168 million shoeboxes to children in over 160 countries and territories. For many of these children, the gift-filled shoebox is the first gift they have ever received.”

According to Clayton, more than 14 million children worldwide who have received a shoebox gift have participated in ‘The Greatest Journey’óa 12-lesson discipleship program, since 2010. Children learn from trained, local volunteers what it means to follow Jesus and share their faith with friends and family.

Those wishing to buy gifts online for donation are encouraged to visit samaritanspurse.org/buildonline, where they can match gifts to children of a specific age and gender.
