Payette man dies when hitting parked semi-truck

Emergency personnel respond to the scene of a fatal crash just before 2 p.m. on Thursday on Highway 201N.

ONTARIO — A Payette man died on Thursday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 201B, near milepost 23.

According to a news release from Oregon State Police, troopers and emergency personnel responded to the crash at about 1:38 p.m.

Preliminary Investigation reveals a 2019 Chevy 3500 Silverado, driven by Tommy Smith, 48, of Payette, was heading north on the highway, the release states. For unknown reasons, police say the vehicle drifted off the northbound shoulder striking the trailer of a parked commercial motor vehicle. 

Smith died at the scene of the crash.

Jeffery Campbell, 55, of Nampa, who was sitting in semi-truck was not injured.

Emergency personnel closed the highway for about two hours; Ontario Fire and Rescue and the Oregon Department of Transportation assisted State Police.
