OWYHEE — Two people in a vehicle that were caught in a mudslide near the Owyhee Dam yesterday were able to escape without injury.

Owyhee Lake Road, from Over Street to the dam is now closed due to multiple mudslides which are blocking travel, according to a news release this morning from Malheur County Sheriff Brian Wolfe.

Dispatch received reports about the mudslides across the road at about 7:21 p.m., after heavy rain saturated the area when thunderstorms rolled through that portion of the county at about 6:30 p.m.

“Crews and equipment from the Nyssa Road district, Malheur County Road department, and Owyhee Irrigation have been working on clearing the road way throughout the night, but travel is still not passable over the road,” reads the release. “Crews will continue to work on the clearing until the area acceptable for safe passage on the road.”

Residents are not impacted by the road closures, according to Wolfe.
