VALE — Local voters turned down the Ontario School District bond that was on Tuesday’s ballot for the Special District Election.

“Last night was a bit of a disappointment to us, especially due to the magnitude of needs that could have been met with this bond measure,” wrote Taryn Smith, public information officer for the district, in an email this morning. “But there are still a lot of amazing things that we have going on within our schools and we are going to work that much harder at showing Ontario that our schools are something worth investing in.”

In the second round of ballots counted, the ‘No’ votes outnumbered ‘Yes’ votes 1474-1,023.

“This bond measure would have secured many necessary improvements to our facilities. It is unfortunate that the majority of voters did not understand those needs,” Smith wrote.

Among those improvements the bond would have been used for were upgrades to multiple facilities within the district, including Aiken, Alameda, Cairo and May Roberts elementary schools, as well as the middle and high schools.

The district also planned on using the money to build new entrances at the high school, as well as Aiken and Alameda elementary schools.

Funds also would have been used to construct a sixth-grade building on the middle school campus.

At the high school, the bond money would have been used to relocate and renovate the band/choir room and make an upgrade to the locker rooms to meet ADA and safety standards.

The plan also called for multiple general upgrades, including replacing old windows.

“Our teachers and staff work above and beyond their expectations and we are changing the way we educate in Ontario: test scores and graduation rates are trending positively, and other school districts are looking to Ontario as an example,” wrote Taryn.

She expressed gratitude for those who turned out to vote and to those who reached out to the district to ask questions and seek clarity.

“Now we focus on continuing the success within our classrooms and celebrate our 2019 graduates!”

Local results of the election follow. All results are still unofficial. Of 15,309 eligible voters, 3,924 (25.6 percent) ballots were turned in.
