March 15, 1932 - Sept. 16, 2012

Josefa (Josie or Pepa) Herrera Ponce, 80, Ontario, passed away suddenly at home Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012.

Josie was born March 15, 1932, to Jesus and Jesusita Herrera Contreras in San Elizario, Texas. She met and married the love of her life in 1953. To this union four children were born, two daughters and two sons.

Josie was an extremely hard worker. She worked at Heinz Frozen Foods for many years and eventually retired from there. She also held down at least one other job while working for Heinz. After retiring she continued to work cleaning houses into her 70’s. Josie was a loving caring person who touched many lives. She made friends almost instantly.  She loved to spend time with her family, especially if she could feed them. Josie was a great storyteller; her favorites to tell would scare the pants off of the manliest man! She also loved a good bargain! Going yard-selling was her favorite pastime. Josie’s smile and infectious laugh will be missed each and everyday by her family and friends.

Josie was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Luis Herrera, Manuel Herrera, Baudelio Herrera, Victorio Herrera, and Blandino Herrera; her sisters, Enriquita Martinez and Luz Correa; and adopted son, Javier Ponce; and many aunts and uncles.

Josie is survived by her husband, Richard; her sisters, Cruz (Alfredo) Cortez, Alice (Abel) Garcia, Carmen Tijerina; her sons, Robert (Susan) Ponce, Frank (Nadine) Ponce; her daughters, Susie Longoria, Toni (Juan) Renteria; adopted son, Alfredo (Keely) Ponce; her grandchildren, Tonya Ponce, Joseph Ponce, Melda (Hector) Almaraz, Blanca (Jorge) Valdez, Crissie (Roy) Gonzalez, Rikki (Amber) Ponce, Geddy (Jennifer) Ponce, Christina (Michael) Kolnick, Dawn (Jeremy) Phelps, Stephanie (Brock) Allison, Nina (Jason) Coleman, Sandy (Cruz) Castellanos, Mario (Jamie) Renteria and many great-grandchildren.

A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with a Mass and graveside burial at Evergreen Cemetery Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 11 a.m.

Condolences may be sent to the family at

Services are under the direction of Haren-Wood Funeral Chapel, Ontario.
