Lady Tigers sneak past Nyssa in thriller

Nyssa—It was a battle to the end when the Nyssa girls basketball team took on Ontario High school Tuesday night in Nyssa, but, in the end, Nyssa lost 54-56.

“We thought we could play better than that,” Nyssa Coach Danny Pratt said. “ We had some really silly fouls too far from the basket.” We need to work on that. This was our first game, and we just need to work out the kinks.”

In the first quarter, the Lady Bulldogs pulled out into the lead, ending the quarter at 20-12. Then in the second quarter, they only added six points and the Ontario Tigers added 16 points putting them into the lead at 26-28 ending the first half.

In the third quarter, the Bulldogs fought with the Tigers over the ball ending with at tie at 41-41.

In the final stretch, it looked like the game was going to go into overtime. With 45 seconds on the clock, they were tied at 54-54. Ontario called a timeout with 23 seconds on the clock to set up the final seconds of the game.

Jenny Yano of the Ontario Tigers took a foul shot and made the score, making it 54-56. With six seconds on the clock the Lady bulldogs had the ball and attempted a buzzer-beating shot from behind the half court line, but the shot never reached its mark.

 “We can play better then we played today,” Pratt said.

For Nyssa Amanda Bittinger led the team with 20 points, while Breona Bittinger and Lacey Jones added nine points each.

“It was another great battle again, we beat Nampa in our first game of the season,” Ontario Coach Jon Buck said. “We got behind in the first quarter and the kids really clamped down on defense in the second quarter. I can’t say enough about the imporvements the team is making.”

For Ontario, Jenny Yano led the team with 24 points and Ali Babij added nine points.

The Bulldogs will play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday hosting LaGrande and The Tigers will travel to Weiser at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

New Plymouth 54, Payette 19

In other girls prep basketball action, the New Plymouth Lady Pilgrims had no trouble dispatching the Payette Pirates, 54-19. Sienna Edmunson led all scorers with 20 points. Payette committed 23 turnovers in the game compared to New Plymouth’s five.

Parma 67, Homedale 33

In Homedale, the Parma Lady Panthers improved to 4-0 behind the strong play of its post players Kali Roche, Becca Cox and Alli Nielsen.

Roche finished with14 points, Nielsen logged 15 and Cox tallied 13.

Fruitland 51, Vale 37

In Fruitland, the Lady Grizz remain perfect through four games as they upended the Vale Vikings 51-37 in a non-conference girls basketball game Tuesday.

Fruitland’s Lindsey Jones was the top producer of the game with 17 points, while Vale’s Brooke Hawkins and Amy Delong each scored 11 points.
