When it comes to the game of basketball, there were not many better than Fruitland's Ty Pena. Pena is the son of Martin Pena and Marlys Rassmusen.
The Fruitland graduate had a knack for hitting the key three-pointer in a crutial part of the game.
But that was then and this in now and the the high top tennis shoes will stay in the gym bag as Pena will reach for the golf spikes as he continues his education at College of the Canyons in Valencia, Calif., home of the Cougars. The Cougars men's golf team is coming off sixth place finish at the California Community College Championships, and have been champs of that league five times, with the latest coming in 2008.
All summer Pena has been tuning up his stroke in a variety of different tournaments, in addition to spending quality time with the driving range and putting greens at Scotch Pines Golf Course in Payette.
Pena said he decided to persue golf at College of the Canyons because he said following a visit to the school he liked what he saw and experienced.
"I went to visit during spring break of my senior year," Pena said. "I liked the coaches and my teammates were really cool. I like the fit."
During his time in California, Pena said he plans to improve his game and see where that will take him following his two years with the Cougars.
"I'll see where it takes me," Pena said. "Staying in California would be alright, but I am also attracted to Boise St."
The Grizzly grad said he will get his general studies taken care of at the College of the Canyons, but added he plans to get into education or in to business.
Dreaming about playing in the PGA has always been a dream for Pena, but he also realizes it takes a lot of work to make it to that level.
"I am going to go down there (California) and work my butt off on the course," Pena said. "But my first priority will be school."
Pena said playing golf for the Grizzlies was a wonderful experience and he enjoyed his time as member of Fruitland High School. Pena said he is thankful for all the support his family gave him while at FHS.
"I would like to thank my parents for the dedication and support the showed me," Pena said. "Also my swing coach Todd Bindner. He has really helped me over the past four years. Without him I do not know where I would be with my game."
Pena added that Mike Covakos taught him the mental approach to the game and Scott Masingill who worked with him on all aspects of his game.
