FRUITLAND — While representing Idaho at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis in October, the Fruitland High School FFA floriculture team finished third in the nation.

The team placed first in the state Floriculture Career Development event and earned the opportunity to compete against all other state-winning teams at the national competition.

The nine-hour event consisted of individual practicums relating to many aspects of the floral industry including plant identification, corsage construction, flower arrangements, plant cuttings, job interview, plant disorder identification and treatment, one-on-on sales, telephone skills, problems solving and a written test.

There was also a team activity in which team members were required to create floral designs for various events such as weddings and anniversaries.

The team consisted of Haylee Wininger (45th high), Melissa Lowham (28th high), Mason Sideroff (14th high) and Adam Roberts (12th high). All four team members received individual gold emblems, and the team received a gold award for its efforts.

" Glad to see that the Fruitland FFA continues to be one of the best chapters in the entire nation. Mr. Tess would be proud to know his son, Mike, carries on the tradition of excellence and competetiveness. The values and skills I learned from FFA and shop class are used in my everyday life, and I will always know at the dinner table "the ship goes out to sea". "
