VALE — A former Nyssa city employee accused of stealing money from the city is scheduled for a pretrial conference and plea hearing in early January.
Hilda Contreras, 46, Nyssa, was arraigned Nov. 10 after being indicted by grand jury Oct. 22 and being charged with aggravated theft, a class b felony.
Contreras, a city clerk who was in charge of payroll as part of her duties, is accused of committing the theft of $10,000 or more in cash from the city of Nyssa between Jan. 1, 2006, and June 30, 2009, Malheur County Deputy District Attorney Lung Hung said, adding he did not know the exact amount of money.
Contreras, who was never arrested but indicted instead, was released from county jail on a release agreement and has agreed to have no contact at Nyssa City Hall.
Her pretrial conference is scheduled for Jan. 8, and her plea hearing is set for 11:15 a.m. Jan. 11.
In other law enforcement news, the Malheur County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate a series of burglaries that have been occurring in rural Malheur County in which fuel and various farm equipment was stolen.
“We’ve been having some problems out in the Adrian area with shops being burglarized,” Malheur County Undersheriff Brian Wolfe said.
Last week, for example, a suspect or suspects stole 30 to 40 John Deere-type oil and fuel filters from a farm shop.
“The other thing we find is they’ve been going to a lot of shops stealing fuel out of farm rigs, and they’re stealing some tools, too,” Wolfe said, in one instance a Ford pickup was also stolen.
The primary area of these burglaries has been in between Adrian and Nyssa, Wolfe said, adding the sheriff’s office has begun extra patrols in the area but asks anybody who has seen or sees anything suspicious to call the sheriff’s office, especially if somebody tries to sell oil or fuel filters or other farm tools or equipment without a license.
