Fruitland — Good reading skills are the foundation for a successful future. That was the message behind this year’s National Young Readers Week, an event that was co-founded in 1989 by the Pizza Hut “BOOK IT!” National Reading Incentive Program and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress.
National Young Readers Week is an annual event designed to promote reading among elementary school-aged children. By providing positive adult role models, students learn that reading is both a skill that is vital for future success and an enjoyable pastime.
Fruitland Elementary chose the TVCC women’s basketball team as its “reading role models,” and invited the athletes to read to the students.
Team members graciously volunteered their time and read their favorite children’s books to the students.
“The students really enjoyed having the TVCC women’s basketball team read to them, and they had fun asking them questions about college, basketball and their favorite things,” Terri Vasquez, Fruitland reading specialist said.
The team members have decided to continue volunteering their time at Fruitland Elementary School during the year.
They will be part of the Dr. Seuss Birthday celebration and assisting with the Adaptive PE Classes.
