ONTARIO — A story of love, laughs and leaving this world too soon awaits patrons at Treasure Valley Community College’s production of “Heaven Can Wait” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday and at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Meyer-McLean Theatre, campus entrance, 676 S.W. Fifth Ave., Ontario.
The play, by Harry Segal, follows character Joe Pendleton through reincarnation after a mix-up by “the messengers,” who take his soul during a plane crash in which he wasn’t intended to die, TVCC Theatre Director Katie Bennett said.
“He (Pendleton) is really mad and wants to go home, but they already cremated his body,” Bennett said, adding an old, rich man’s body was chosen for the reincarnation. “It’s what you call a ‘screwball comedy,’ something really zany. It’s a fantasy, a comedy, a romance, and it has a lot of important things to say about how you live your life.”
Set in 1936, the play has a “really good script,” Bennett said.
“It’s been made into three movies with different titles: ‘Here Comes Mr. Jordan’ (1941), one with Warren Beatty (“Heaven Can Wait,” 1978) and a new one with Chris Rock (“Down to Earth,” 2001),” she said.
Taking the lead as Pendleton in TVCC’s play is Nick Roberts.
“He (Roberts) has been working hard on his character,” Bennett said. “He’s real energetic, enthusiastic. There’s a lot of levels to his performance.”
Bennett said many people, on and off the stage, have helped prepare for the performance.
“It’s going to be a good show,” she said. “Everybody has really come up with fun characters. They’re really invested in it.”
Tickets cost $8, $6 for seniors and students and $1 for TVCC students with identification for this theater-in-the-round performance.
