Wolverines draw tough opponent in Buhl

Buhl-The Weiser Wolverine football team has possibly drawn the toughest assignment of the three Snake River Valley Conference teams with a matchup against the Buhl Indians.

Buhl enters the state tournament with an 8-0 record and ranked third in the state in class 3A.

Weiser comes in with a No. 7 rank and a record of 5-3 but will play this game on the road.

“It’s a rough draw,” Weiser head coach John Srholec said. “To have conference champions run into each other, that’s really tough.”

Srholec said the Indians are a fast, tall and talented team, and this match up is an interesting one for his team.

“We have not seen anything like these guys this season,” he said. “They run a lot of conventional offense, with an I-back and single-back formations. You just do not see too much of that in Idaho football these days.”

Srholec said his team is excited to play this game, and they believe they can match up against the Indians and find success.

Buhl head coach Stacy Wilson said the defensive look that Weiser brings to the table will force his team to make some adjustments in the passing game.

“Their two-deep safety look will make us modify some of our passing game, but, hopefully, we can run the ball a little bit to get those safeties closer to the line of scrimmage,” Wilson said.

Wilson added that Weiser has big physical kids on the line and is concerned about containing Spencer Chandler and Alton Funk.

“We must play responsible defensive football if we want to win the game,” Wilson said. “Everyone must do their job.”

Srholec said Buhl has had success in the playoffs in the past few years, and he said the Indians will be ready to play.

“They are not going to roll over for us,” Srholec said. “But they do know they have a tough matchup in the first round. For them, a clear league champions to draw us, a partial league champion, that’s a tough draw for them as well.”

Weiser and Buhl will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday in Buhl.
