Fruitland’s Lauren Farmer (2) pushes the ball toward the Filer goal during the Lady Grizzlies’ opening game at the girls 3A state soccer tournament Thursday in Caldwell. Fruitland defeated Filer, 8-0, to advance to the semifinals, where it will take on Snake River, who defeated Bonners Ferry, 2-0, today at 2 p.m. |
Caldwell—The defending 3A girls soccer champs looked as if they had not missed a beat between last year and this year as the Lady Grizzlies opened the 2009 girls soccer state tournament with an easy 8-0 win over Filer Thursday at Vallivue High School in Caldwell.
Fruitland peppered the Filer goal keeper all game long, and that relentless assault led to five first-half goals for the Lady Grizzlies.
But Fruitland did not let up and in the second stanza, continued to attack the failing Filer defenders, which resulted in three more scores for the defending champions.
“Experience was the key factor in today’s win,” Fruitland head coach Frank Teunissen said. “We have 10 seniors on this team, and they have played in the state tournament together for the past four years.”
Prepping for today’s action against Snake River, who defeated Bonners Ferry 2-0, Teunissen said his team is focused and ready to play.
he added his team ready to defend its state title.
“Even the girls coming off the bench contributed well for us today,” the coach said. “Plus, we have every girl healthy, and to come into a state tournament healthy is huge for us.”
Scoring goals for Fruitland were Lauren Farmer, Tess Thompson and Stephanie Rule, who all pounded in two goals each, while Breelayne Teunissen and Lindsey Jones each added one goal in the win. Picking up the assists were Jones with four, Thompson had three and Becca Davis who got the final assist.
“I am real proud of this team. They played really well,” Teunissen said. “I am also proud of what Payette did today. They won as well. Who knows, maybe we can have an all- Snake River Valley Conference finals this year. But we can’t say that yet. We have to take it one game at a time, and now we have to focus on the next opponent.”
Payette 4, Community School 0
In Caldwell, the Payette Lady Pirates advanced to the semifinals with a 4-0 shutout over Community School Thursday in the opening game of the 2009 3A state girls soccer tournament. Payette head coach Gordon Peterson said his team did a great job in the opening game. Peterson said the key in the win over Community School came down to experience.
“Most of the girls on this team have been here for the past three years, and they played like it,” Peterson said.
Scoring goals for Payette were Mayra Flores with two goals, while Hailey Goss and Crystal Gutierrez each scored one.
“We did not play our best game today, so there is room to improve,” Peterson said. “But overall, we played well enough to win, and I am pleased with that.”
Payette will battle Orofino today at 2 p.m. at Vallivue High School in Caldwell.
