Joe Hideo Kino, Fruitland, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at Presbyterian Community Care Center, Ontario. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, at the Idaho-Oregon Buddhist Temple, Ontario. Joe was born to Kusunosuke and Sono Itani Kino March 20, 1920, in Seattle, Wash. In 1928, Mom took Joe and his brothers to Japan where they stayed with their grandmother and where Joe was educated until he returned to Seattle in the spring of 1938. Later that year, the family moved to Bainbridge Island where they farmed until Spring of 1942, when all the Japanese families on the island were evacuated to the Manzanar relocation center in California and were interned there until 1943, at which time they were transferred to Minidoka, Idaho. In the summer of 1944, Joe was granted permission to leave Minidoka to work at the Sasaki family farm on Oregon Slope, then transferred to Morishita’s family farm. In 1947, he and his father began farming together in Ontario. In 1960, Joe began work at then Ore-Ida, now Heinz Company, where he worked for 27 years until his retirement in 1988. In 1963, Joe and Reiko Shiraishi were married with a reception in Ontario. They were married for 22 years, when Reiko passed away suddenly in 1985. In April of 1988, Joe and Yasuko Hatano Kino were married in Las Vegas and resided in Fruitland. They were married for 21 years at the time of his death in October. Joe’s hobbies were bowling, golfing, reading and playing cards with his friends. He was an active member of the Idaho-Oregon Buddhist Temple until his illness. He had been a past member and instructor at the Ontario Judo Club. He was also a member of the Nisei bowling leagues and Ontario and Scotch Pine Golf Clubs. Joe is survived by his devoted wife, Yasuko; brother, Shoji (Shirley) Kino; sisters, Setsuko Konishi and Rae (Shig) Nishida; his children, Riki Shiraishi, Maxine (Ken) Teramura, Pauline (Dan) Catterson, Jim (Joan) Kino, Nancy (Larry) Massaro, Apryl (Rick) Bentley; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He will be missed by all. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation for the care given to Joe by the doctors, emergency and critical care staff of Holy Rosary Medical Center and the Presbyterian Community Care Center.
