For Williams, it’s all about pushing more information to the public

Payette — Payette City Councilman Jeff Williams said he has been thinking about running for mayor for a couple years now, but the time hasn’t been right.

Williams said now the time is right, and he is ready for the Nov. 3 election.

Williams has been on the council for the past 51⁄2 years. He said, although he has enjoyed serving on the council, he wants to be more involved in the community and decision-making of Payette.

“If you want to make some changes then you’ve got to get involved and make it happen,” he said. Williams said he has five pin-pointed reasons why he is running for mayor. The first, he said, is his business experience and his ability to balance a budget and manage people. The second is his desire for more community involvement in the city government process. The third reason he listed is to generate better public relations.

“There is more the Council needs to know about than is being provided at City Council meetings,” Williams said. “We need more communication with the council people and more work sessions to be updated on what is going on.”

Williams said he has been approached by a number of people who have said they would like better communication within the city and residents of Payette. He said, as it is, the current mayor, Doug Henderson, has limited residents to 5-minutes each at the meetings for voicing their concerns and comments.

He said Henderson told residents if they want more time, they are to ask to be placed on the agenda to be heard by the council.

The fourth platform point he listed is a goal for the city to give local businesses the first opportunity to provide products and services the city is purchasing. His final point centered around open government and his desire for meeting notices and agendas to be posted in a timely manner. He asserted the city has not followed the open meetings laws in the past and vowed to change that.

“I would like to install oversight committees,” Williams said. “I want department heads, council members and residents of Payette to meet once a month or something and have a meeting about the process of Payette. I really think that will keep us all more informed.”

Williams has served on numerous boards and committees in Payette County and said it is better when everyone works together.

He said everyone wants to obtain the same goal in the long run success.

He has served on the Payette County Planning and Zoning Commission, Payette-Washington County Board of Realtors, and Urban Renewal District, along with many other boards.

Williams said he thinks the government in Payette needs to be a little more communicative with its residents, and he said it is his main goal to open the city up to the people.

“Together, we will serve our community,” Williams said.

" it appears as if jeff has won more than just the mayorship of Payette, he has also won the salesman of the year award. Possibly he should have chose used cars over reality, the shoe seems to fit better. 1/2 of Payette will regret their choice while the other half looks to the future and ways to clean up the mess that is about to take office. " The best man won and all of you who sit at your computers and write blogs complaining about how the city is ran should step up and get involved if you think you can do a better job!! I think Jeff speaking up at the forum was brave!! Doug on the other hand likes to spread rumors behind peoples backs. So which is better? The man who will confront and take it head on!! Your new mayor Jeff Williams!!! "

" 0321- I would like to know where you got your lies from on my suing the City. Yes, I did break my leg on a city water meter that was not installed correctly, I did file a claim with the City's insurance just as I would have if it was at someones home or otherwise and I did not file for all of the medical expenses, only what I had to pay for my deductible. And the City ran right down and fixed it because they knew that it was a fault of theirs that needed to be taken care of. And you are correct, we do owe the IRS, but if you haven't noticed times have been tough lately for everyone, we aren't proud of this but you do what you have to do to survive. If you are going to be so good at checking us out, did you do the same for Hendersons, I'm sure they have a few skeletons in the closet too, but if I was you I would call and discuss this with people not slither around and talk about it behind their back. That is what a coward does. And the realtors and developers are not making a fortune off of the city, how can you even say such a thing, they are selling land for individuals not the city. Ignorance must be bliss. "

" To 0321 - obviously you weren't going to vote for Williams to begin with because at the forum he was the one trying to better Payette, Henderson was the one whining and trying to cover up all his lies that he and his co-horts have been spreading around. "

" I was simply trying to point out ONE reason why I like Jeff Williams best and didn't mean to offend all of you. The people who know me also know that animal-friendly candidates are important to me, and if that isn't important to you, so be it. I guess a little bit of levity is over your heads. I notice none of you had the guts to sign your real names. That's the wonderful thing about blogs - you can seriously insult other people and not even have to sign your name. Oh well. May the best person win! "

" After reading this article and blogs its no wonder people don't turn out to vote. I think we might be better off if we go down to the grade school, pick the student who colors between the lines best and let them lead the city. "

" To 0321 - so you did some research, yes the Williams have a judgement, did you not notice the ecomony went to heck in the last year or so! And if you did so much checking you should have been able to find out how many times Henderson has been turned over to a collection agency for bills not paid. If you are going to talk trash, do it both ways not just one sided. You are one reason that the city is run by the "good ol boys". Makes me want to puke. "

" You did not hear Mr Williams attack Henderson,he was stating the truth about all the lies and rumors around town, for one thing his wife did break her leg 2 years ago when she stepped in a city water meter that was not set at the right height. She did not sue the city she turned in a medical bill for the deductible that she had to pay like anyone would, whether it was the city of a homeowner. The people that spread these lies should be ashamed of themselves what good does it do the City!???!! Just vote for the most competent individual and if you have any common sense you will know it isn't Doug with his gang of city henchmen trying to use scare tactics and lies to get votes!! Is that what you want to represent your city?????? "

" I was going to vote for Mr. Williams until I went to the candidates forum. If you attack the Mayor in an open forum, what will you do to people behind closed doors.I did some research. Here's what I found, the city is paying your health care but yet you allowed your wife to sue the city, for a broken ankle and collect. You have a judgement against you from the IRS.These are just two of the items I found in one week.So far what I see is the realtors, and developers making money off the city. How come you did not ask how much to heat the new animal shelter you think we need, but yet the Fire dept is a big concern, animals over the safety of people I think not.You fooled me for awhile, but your public forum showed who you really are. "

" Great, now you want to give rights to DOGS! Did you read this right? Now her dog that is, "part of my family", will VOTE. Geeze give me a break, they are ANIMALS for god sake! Smaller brains, (well maybe not smaller than their owners) and no thinking. They exist to serve and please. Nothing else! If they are a stray, banggagone. They carry germs and make kids sick. Which is more important? A dumb dog, a stupid cat, or a small smart human being with a great future ahead of him/her? Dogs and cats should be fed to the wolves... "

" Are any of the two candidates going to clean up that trashy West-side part of town? A house at the intersect of North 5th ave and 7th street is a classic example. Mr. Simon would be turning in his grave if he only knew.
Clean up your town Payette. "

Barb Hutchinson wrote on Oct 29, 2009 12:45 PM:

" Driving around today, I saw many campaign signs for Jeff Williams and many for Doug Henderson, both running for Mayor of Payette. Actually, this time my dog is telling me who the best candidate is. That’s right, in my house my dog does vote!

Over 50% of all Payette households own animals and most of those own dogs. This is our chance to make a difference and let our love for our animals maybe make a better life for dogs in this town. So who is my dog saying to vote for? The most dog-friendly candidate on the ballot, that’s who. And that would be Jeff Williams.

I sat in a meeting a couple of years ago and heard Mr. Henderson say that he believed the reason Atherton Kennels was having a hard time staying in business was because they kept the dogs too long. He said they should be killed after 3 days with no exceptions. He said he would take a hard line on that. Shocking words, you can be sure. And certainly not Jeff Williams words. Jeff supports the animal shelter and he has called more than once, looking for the shelter’s help with an animal problem that he was concerned about. And Jeff, like most people in this town, certainly does not want to see the dogs killed – he wants to see them cared for and treated humanely. And, in my experience, a town that cares about its animals also cares about its people.

So if you want to see the most animal-friendly candidate win this election, you need to register to vote and actually head down and VOTE. Because you can be sure that all the people who agree with Mr. Henderson and think all the stray dogs should be killed WILL be voting. Let your dog’s voice be heard! "

Voter wrote on Oct 24, 2009 9:56 AM:

" The fourth item is the one to focus on. Nothing should be done in any town by outside contractors if there are locals who are able to do the work at a reasonable price. This should include city government and state government projects. The school districts, in particular, have no regard for this rule of common sense. Locals need to be given the opportunity to bid on all projects, both large and small. And if an outside contractor is hired due to bonding capability, he should be required to use local subs. "

" Mr. Williams ideas are not anything close to Obama's, he wants the citizens of Payette to be a part of the process, not feel like they are just totally ignored or excluded. He is also looking at ways to make this city prosper and thrive, maybe you need to read the article again, or better yet, give Mr. Williams a call! "

Albert wrote on Oct 22, 2009 9:07 AM:

" I think Mr. Williams might have the same ideas as President Obama. The president set up departments and named Czars to head these departments, is this what is next in Payette. I can't imagine the need to have regular monthly meetings to discuss the process of Payette. What is the city council's job? Right now the economy is such that we need to be looking for ways to help this community survive through these hard times. "
