Payette — Payette City Councilman Jeff Williams said he has been thinking about running for mayor for a couple years now, but the time hasn’t been right.
Williams said now the time is right, and he is ready for the Nov. 3 election.
Williams has been on the council for the past 51⁄2 years. He said, although he has enjoyed serving on the council, he wants to be more involved in the community and decision-making of Payette.
“If you want to make some changes then you’ve got to get involved and make it happen,” he said. Williams said he has five pin-pointed reasons why he is running for mayor. The first, he said, is his business experience and his ability to balance a budget and manage people. The second is his desire for more community involvement in the city government process. The third reason he listed is to generate better public relations.
“There is more the Council needs to know about than is being provided at City Council meetings,” Williams said. “We need more communication with the council people and more work sessions to be updated on what is going on.”
Williams said he has been approached by a number of people who have said they would like better communication within the city and residents of Payette. He said, as it is, the current mayor, Doug Henderson, has limited residents to 5-minutes each at the meetings for voicing their concerns and comments.
He said Henderson told residents if they want more time, they are to ask to be placed on the agenda to be heard by the council.
The fourth platform point he listed is a goal for the city to give local businesses the first opportunity to provide products and services the city is purchasing. His final point centered around open government and his desire for meeting notices and agendas to be posted in a timely manner. He asserted the city has not followed the open meetings laws in the past and vowed to change that.
“I would like to install oversight committees,” Williams said. “I want department heads, council members and residents of Payette to meet once a month or something and have a meeting about the process of Payette. I really think that will keep us all more informed.”
Williams has served on numerous boards and committees in Payette County and said it is better when everyone works together.
He said everyone wants to obtain the same goal in the long run success.
He has served on the Payette County Planning and Zoning Commission, Payette-Washington County Board of Realtors, and Urban Renewal District, along with many other boards.
Williams said he thinks the government in Payette needs to be a little more communicative with its residents, and he said it is his main goal to open the city up to the people.
“Together, we will serve our community,” Williams said.
