Payette takes down Grizzlies

Fruitland — Payette took advantage of five Fruitland turnovers Friday to keep its Snake River Valley Conference football title hopes alive as the Pirates pulled off a 26-21 victory over the Grizzlies in Fruitland.

It was Payette’s first win over the inter-country rival Grizzlies since an 18-14 triumph over Fruitland Oct. 7, 1994. It was only Payette’s third win over Fruitland in 32 years.

For Fruitland, it was the first SRV contest the Grizzlies have lost on their home field since falling to Middleton Oct. 24, 2003.

In other Friday night games:

Nyssa beat Riverside, 41-0.

Spray-Mitchell beat Adrian, 54-30.

Vale beat Umatilla, 41-0.

" Congrats to Payette--they are a better team than Fruitland this year. I predict it will be another ten years before they beat Fruitland again. "

" Congrats to Payette and their big win. But maybe now this will shut everyone up about Fruitland needing to move up in rank because they were beating everyone in years past. "

" Payette has a good team this year but so does Fruitland. This is a rebuilding year for Fruitland and yet they are still one of the better teams in 3A. Hopefully, Payette can go far in state this year like Fruitland has in the past. "

" The Fruitland team is working with a different set of resources than they've had for the last four years. So is Payette. 5 turnovers--I think that tells the story, and I haven't heard Fruitland making any excuses. I did hear the Payette kids ringing the bell Friday night! Congratulations to the Pirates and their coaches. "

" It was a good game...this should be the year Payette does well. I wasn't impressed with Fruitland this game, they had some dumb turnovers and some really bad play calling. But thats normal...close game and the coach becomes 100% predictable on what he is gonna call....well expect for the last drive. 4 pass plays in a row to end the game with over 3mins to go? CONFUSED! "

" Congratulating Payette wasn't enough? It's one thing to win the game, another to learn to win with class. I hope your boys are better at that than you are. Payette won the game with their big kids up front, and they were just the tougher team in a tough ballgame. If you can't run the ball in the wing-T, you will not win. Amazing that even with all the turnovers by the Grizzlies, they still had the game won until they fumbled in the endzone. Think, in hindsight, the Fruitland coaches would like to take a safety there? Payette was the better team on Friday and deserved the win. "

" Congradulations Payette on your victory over Fruitland. I can't wait to hear Fruitland's excuse why they lost, because you know its coming the same way they did when New Plymouth beat Fruitland a few years back. They, (Fruitland) will never admit that they were out played and in part beat by their own ego. I guess thats why these upsets are so apealing. "
