Fate of UI research centers still

undetermined

LEWISTON (AP) — The University of Idaho says closing one or more of a 12 agriculture and extension centers is still an option, but a final decision could depend on negotiations with business and industry groups.

Provost Doug Baker says the state has made a significant investment in the centers, and the university is now trying to determine if private stakeholders are willing to invest as well.

The university is facing a $1.5 million shortfall in funding for a dozen agriculture and extension centers, which were already facing a $3.2 million funding cut this year.

BOISE (AP) — U.S. Rep. Walt Minnick, an Idaho Democrat, collected nearly $290,000 in campaign contributions since July, giving him a fundraising head start over Republican rivals who will be fighting it out in a contested primary next May.

Minnick brought in $287,000 between July 1 and Sept. 30, according to a Federal Election Commission report filed on Thursday.

He had more than $640,000 banked at the close of the period.

Vaughn Ward, a former campaign aide to GOP presidential contender John McCain, said he’s collected more than $110,000 from supporters, though his FEC report wasn’t immediately available on Thursday afternoon.

Ken Roberts, the Idaho House GOP majority caucus chairman who is running against Ward, brought in $54,920. He had nearly $42,000 cash on hand on Sept. 30.
