Charles H. Stewart, Ontario, passed away Monday, Oct.12, 2009, at Presbyterian Community Care Center, Ontario, of natural causes.
He was born March 12, 1918, to George and Myrtal Stewart in Payette, Idaho. He would be the eldest of five children.
Soon after, the family moved to a farm south of Ontario, Ore., off of Morgan Avenue. Charles attended Valley View Elementary School and Ontario High School, graduating in 1936.
After high school, he worked in farming in the Ontario and Unity areas until World War II. Charles enlisted in the Army in 1941 and served his country in Panama and the Galapagos Islands until he was honorably discharged in 1945. Charlie returned to Ontario and went to work for the Department of Agriculture for the State of Oregon as an inspector. He met his wife, Beverly Harris, in 1945, and they were married on Jan. 22, 1950, in Winnemucca, Nev. Charlie’s work for the state took him and Beverly throughout Oregon with stops in Klamath Falls, Milton Freewater, then onto Salem in 1966 where they remained until returning to Ontario in 1974. Charlie retired in 1980, and he and Beverly remained in Ontario, where they enjoyed their retirement with frequent trips to the “boonies” with their travel trailer. Throughout his life Charlie was an avid golfer, playing every day if he could. If you were a golfer in Ontario during the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s you probably knew who Charlie was.
Charlie is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Beverly; his sister, Nellie Thomas, of Vancouver, Wash.; his brother, Wilbur Stewart, of Ontario; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, David “Buzz” Stewart and Joe Stewart. Beverly and the family would like to thank Holy Rosary Medical Center, Presbyterian Community Care Center, Ashley Manor and Dr. David Brauer for their love and care of Charlie during these past months.
No services will be held at his request. Condolences to the family may be made at www.lienkaemper-thomason.com.
