Payette boys soccer gives Fruitland a dose of senior-itis

Argus Observer sports staff

Payette—With eight seniors gracing the roster of the Payette Pirates’ boyssoccer team, Tuesday evening was extra special as the Pirates hosted the Fruitland Grizzlies in a Snake River Valley Conference showdown, and in the end, it was Payette and its seniors coming away with the 4-1 victory.

“We had great defensive play from Pepe Hernandez, Tom LaMue, Sergio Medrano, and Heriberto Mendoza,” Pirates head coach Shaun Bolin said. “It all happened because of their fine defense.”

Joseph Bolin scored early in the game and was assisted by Jose Hernandez for the Pirates’ first goal.

Then Hernandez picked up his second assist when Evan Hershey scored 10 minutes later.

Leading 2-0, the Pirates gave up their lone goal off a penalty kick, however, Payette answered the call with another goal by Bolin, which was assisted by Hershey, to stake the Pirates to a 3-1 advantage.

The score remained 3-1 for all but the final few minutes of regulation, when Hershey assisted Kenny Kessler for the final score of the game.

“We played close to a complete game tonight, but we lost control of the ball game in the latter part of the first half,”Bolin said. “We gained control back in the second half.”

The Pirates pounded the Fruitland keeper with 17 shots on goal, and Payette keeper Austin Waynetska tallied 11 saves  in the win.

At the end of regular season play, the Pirates stand at 6-1-1 heading into the district playoffs, which start this coming Saturday at Fruitland.
