Weiser stands alone on top of SRV
Payette dumps McCall

Weiser—In a league that has, in the past, been dominated by either Weiser or Fruitland, 2009 brings more balance with Payette and Homedale rising to the forefront of the Snake River Valley Conference.

This year, the Wolverines were picked by more than one media outlet, including the Argus Observer to finish third in the SRV.

However, someone forgot to tell Weiser that, and now it finds themselves on top of the league with a 2-0 mark with wins over Payette and Homedale.

Friday, Weiser was tested early by the Trojans as the Wolverines found themselves heading into the locker-room trailing 14-3.

“Man, these kids are trying to kill me every chance they get,” Weiser head coach John Schrolec said as he referred to Friday’s 25-20 victory over Homedale.

Following an intense halftime speech, the Wolverines got to work.

“We looked at ourselves at the break and realized that we were not playing to our potential,” Schrolec said. “But we came out in the second half and played a little different game.”

The Wolverines, did indeed play a little different as they outscored Homedale 22-6 for the win.

Austin Winegar and Alton Funk hooked up six times in the win, and none bigger than the 74-yard catch and run, which resulted in a score to bring the Wolverines to within three points of Homedale at 14-11.

For the game, Funk tallied 150 yards receiving and two scores.

Weiser will heads to McCall Friday, as they seek SRV win No. 3.

Payette 29, McCall 12

In McCall, the Payette Pirates took a 20-0 lead into the break and finished the game with a 29-12 victory.

The Black Thunder defense logged a negative number on McCall’s rushing attack with minus 19 yards, and only gave up 124 yards through the air.

“They (McCall) picked up a couple of big pass plays that I am not to happy about, but neither one of them resulted in a score,” Payette head coach Troy Gleave said.

Leading the Pirates were Damian Reynolds with 14 carries for 76 yards and a score.

Brennan Serrano added 39 yards on nine attempts with a touchdown, while Garrett Grotheer rushed for 26 yards and two scores. Grotheer also added 70 yards to his stats on  3 of 8 passing.

Payette has a bye week and will travel to Fruitland on Oct. 16
