American Falls—The Ontario Tiger football team roared past the American Falls Beavers, 49-12 Friday in a non-league matchup on the road.
Ontario head coach Randy Waite said the scheduling of such a long road trip is by design.
“We do this to prepare our team for the long road trips we will face in the playoffs,” Waite said.
Ontario scored seven points in the opening quarter and followed that with 14 more in the second stanza for a 21-0 lead at the break.
The second half was just as dominating at the first half for the Tigers as they posted 28-second half points, 14 points in each of the third and fourth quarters.
“Our second half play was a lot better than our first half,” Waite said. “But we are pleased with the overall performance.”
Josh Mejia and Nico Martinez were on the same page in the win. Mejia connected with Martinez twice for scores, the first one came in the second stanza an a 36 yard touchdown, the other came in the third quarter on a 45 yard strike.
Mejia finished the game with 124 yards passing.
“Josh threw the ball well for us,” Waite said.
In the running game, Frank Lopez was good for 178 yards on 16 attempts and three scores.
In all the Tigers amassed 433 yards of total offense in the win.
Waite credited the play of his line as they did a good job of opening up the holes for the running game.
Ontario will play its homecoming game against Lakeland, Id., at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Tiger Stadium.
