Inquiry Outside the Cube
Math, science conference slated

LA GRANDE — The Oregon Council of Teachers of Mathematics will host the triennial “Inquiry Outside the Cube: Making the Most of Math and Science Symposium,” a conference for kindergarten through 12th-grade math and science teachers, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 9 at La Grande Middle School in La Grande.

Participants will attend sessions and receive a catered lunch, PDUs, an Eastern Oregon University credit opportunity, information from the state, classroom-ready materials, standards-based lessons and assessment from a national perspective.

They keynote speaker will be Oregon’s 2008 National Teacher of the Year Michael Geisen, a science teacher at Crook County Middle School in Prineville. For seven years, Geisen has helped seventh-grade students experience science through multiple learning pathways with help from humor, music, movement, technology, art, theater, personal connections and more.

Registration costs $75. To register, send a check made out to “Inquiry Outside the Cube” to Nancy Swarat, 1250 W. Hartley Ave., Hermiston, OR 97838, along with a name, address, phone number, school district, grade level, personal and professional e-mail addresses and whether the teacher deals with math, science or both.

The conference was founded in 2006 by the “Chicks from the Stix,” Cheri Clausen, Jennifer Cox, Susan Fisher-Alexander, Nanette Lehman, Dana Marlia, Donna Rainboth, Patty Sandoz, Molly Smith and Nancy Swarat.
