NYSSA —A Nyssa attorney was killed in a head-on collision Wednesday morning near milepost 155 on U.S. Highway 20 near Buchanan, east of Burns, while driving to Burns for a hearing in Harney County Circuit Court.
Oregon State Police reported that Charles Simmons, 32, Ontario, was driving west on the highway when his vehicle crossed the center line and collided with a pickup going east operated by Sterling Wilson, 51, Burns, who was accompanied by his wife, Pamela Wilson, 51.
Simmons’s car came to rest on the westbound shoulder and the pickup, along with the trailer it was pulling, ended up blocking both lanes of travel.
Simmons, an attorney in the law firm of Stunz, Fonda, Kiyuna and Horton, with offices in Nyssa and Ontario, was pronounced dead at the scene, and the Wilsons were transported by ambulance to Harney District Hospital with minor injuries, OSP said.
All three people were wearing safety restraints and the airbags deployed in both vehicles. The highway was closed for about two hours while OSP troopers from Burns, assisted by the Harney County Sheriff’s Office, conducted an investigation. Also helping at the scene were the Burns and Hines fire departments, Harney EMS and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
