Charles Manson follower Susan Atkins dies

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Susan Atkins, a follower of cult leader Charles Manson whose remorseless witness stand confession to killing pregnant actress Sharon Tate in 1969 shocked the world, has died.

She was 61 and had been suffering from brain cancer. Atkins’ death comes less than a month after a parole board turned down the terminally ill woman’s last chance at freedom on Sept. 2.

She was brought to the hearing on a gurney and slept through most of it. California Department of Corrections spokeswoman Terry Thornton said that Atkins died late Thursday night.

" Oh, you mean they act out like Bill Ayers or talk like Rev. Wright?? Hum, I think that is the loons that you so precisely describe. Bet Charlie Manson was a loon too.... "

" Hannatized: a self-induced state mental dullness similar to being lobotomized; preferred by individuals who refuse to think objectively or at any depth beyond 15 second soundbites; results in total lack of sense of humor and may result in childish name calling which they interpret as intelligent behavior. Warning: these individuals are extremely succeptable to simple propaganda techniques and may resort to such unacceptable social behaviors as carrying loaded firearms in public places, blowing up public buildings, assassinating doctors, or screaming loudly and inappropriately at those who disagree with them during public discourse. " I know what you mean. I felt the same way after Timothy McVeigh bombed the federal building in Oklahoma City. Gave me a total distrust of anyone who even looked like a talk radio listener. "

" Oh,man, that was such a scary time, when the Manson Family was in the news. I was a very impressionable tween-ager and I used to get so scared thinking about it that I could hardly sleep at night, much less babysit alone at a neighbor's house or walk home from a late school activity. Gave me a total distrust of anyone who even looked like a hippi. I have read a lot about Manson and his followers since, but I still don't understand his magnetism. "

" Susan Atkins, AKA Sexy Sadie, has now passed on. I can't say she didn't deserve life in prison but I do feel sorry for her younger years. Her life was a mess right out of the gate. Yes, she is a murderer, but maybe God has a better place for her. RIP "
