Weiser loses to Baker, Vale knocks off La Grande

Weiser

The Weiser Wolverines came up short Friday against 4A Baker in a non-conference contest in Weiser.

Baker broke the ice in th second quarter with the first score of the game on a 23 yard run by Stepen Talbot.

Weiser tied the game at 7-7 with a two-yard scamper by Darin Thomas in the third quarter.

In the final quarter, the Bulldogs added 13 more points to the board for a 20 7 advantage.

Weiser was able to find paydirt late in the game on a 15-yard pass frrom Austin Wineger to Alton Funk to bring the score to 20-14.

Weiser finished with 285 yards of total offense, 192 of those yards coming on the ground where Spencer Chandler led the Wolverines with 78 yards on 15 carries.

Vale 18, La Grande 6

In Vale, the Vikings jumped out to an early 12-0 halftime lead. Jeff Williams opened the scoing in the first quarter on a 15 yard run to put the Vikings up 6-0, then in the second quarter, Drew Torrey punched the pigskin in from four-yards out for the 12-0 lead.

In the second half, the Vikings added another six points to the scoreboard on another Williams score. This time he hit paydirt from  nine yards out.

The Vikings picked up 196 of its total 447 yards through the air and rushed for 251 yards. Leading the Vikings in rushing was Williams with 147 yards on 17 carries, while Torrey added 103 yards on 15 tries.

Fruitland 24  , Emmett 17

In Emmett, the Fruitland Grizzlies pounded out 334 yards of rushing and played solid enough defense to keep the Emmett huskies at bay in a 24-17 win.

Fruitland hit the scoreboard first with a safety in the first quarter when Jaxson Suitter pounced on a loose pigskin.

Emmett bounced back with 10 straight points, a four-yard run followed by a 40-yard fieldgoal to take a 10-2 lead into the lockerroom.

In the second half, the Grizzlies hit paydirt in the third quarter when Nic Rayo rumbled into the end zone from 11 yards out.

Then in the final quarter, Fruitland had Jordan Martin punch the ball in from a yard away, followed by a 47-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Tyler Graves. Emmett added a score in the fourth as well.

The Grizzlies had two running backs reach the century mark with Martin totaling 132 yards on  15 carries and Kody Olinger adding 101 yards.

Payette 37, Melba 15

In Payette, Damian Reynolds and Garrett Grotheer scored two touchdowns apiece, and the Payette Pirates rattled off 263 yards rushing to defeat the Melba Mustangs 37-15 in non-league football action Friday.

Reynolds notched a game-high 149 yards rushing and had a scoring runs of 60 and 16, as Payette did the bulk of its scoring in the first and third quarters.

Sophomore phenom Brennan Serrano hit paydirt and also nabbed an interception. Another young Pirate, Patrick Moser, added 28 yards rushing on two carries.

Serrano, Reynolds and Grotheer all scored touchdowns in the opening stanza, and Melba answered with a 42-yard field goal to make the score 19-3 after 12 minutes of action.

The score remained the same until the third quarter, where Reynolds scored on a 16-yard jaunt and Grotheer capped the scoring on a 23-yard scramble.

Payette quarterbacks Travis Blackwell and Grotheer went a combined 2-for-11 for 33 yards and three interceptions.

Payette (1-1) next hosts Marsing Friday.

Council 22, Rimrock 0

In Bruneau, Tyler Farrar had two touchdown runs and Jac Cook added a fumble recovery for a touchdown to lead the Council Lumberjacks to a 22-0 victory over Rimrock.

In all, Council racked up 228 total yards, and the defense stood tall posting its second-straight shutout win.

The Lumberjack defense held Rimrock to four first downs and 16 yards passing in the game.

Farrar rushed for a game-high 150 yards and posted a game-high with 52 yards receiving.

“We knew coming into the season that he was going to be our main weapon on offense,” Council coach Dan Shumway said. “These first two games he’s been a workhorse for us.”

Council (2-0 overall) has a bye this week, and next travel to Cambridge to take on Tri-Valley.
