Payette—It’s a blast to the past with hot rods and motorcycles, street dances and tons of family fun when the 21st annual A&W Cruise Night hits Main Street in Payette Sept. 11 and Sept. 12. The annual event is presented by the A&W Restaurant and the Payette Chamber of Commerce and will begin at 7 p.m. Sept. 11. with the Marshall Co. Friday Night Cruise. Sign-ups for the free Friday night cruise take place in front of the A&W Restaurant. Albertsons will host a barbecue at 6 p.m. to get the night going at Bancroft Park.
“It’s a soc-hop night in Payette,” Payette Chamber of Commerce executive director Shelley Breidenbach said. “It brings back that ’50s feel to town and people love it.”
Breidenbach said the event is a family-friendly event with tons of things for everyone to enjoy, from contests to great music and dancing.
The event will have awards for the best cruiser, along with other fun family activities, such as the Chamber of Commerce and Three Rivers Insurance cook off — for which participants must pre-register. Registration can be done at the Payette Chamber of Commerce. A dance contest, a hula hoop contest and a best-dressed contest will also take place. A&W memorabilia prizes will be awarded to the winners. There will also be a battle of the city departments, a “Get Lost in the Fifties” event at Bancroft Park. All the entertainment is provided by Hanigan Chevrolet, with Big Blue Johnson providing the music from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m., and a street dance on Center Avenue. The Show and Shine Saturday will begin at 8 a.m. at Kiwanis Park and run until 1 p.m. and is hosted by Rods of Idaho and Oregon. Proceeds from the event will go to the RIO scholarship fund, with more prizes to be handed out. No pre-registration is required. However, the event is $12 per entry.
“The community supports this event really well,” car show coordinator Jim Boyer said. “Last year, RIO was able to give out more than $4,000 in scholarship money.”
A fun walk with cash prizes will take place on Sept. 12 as well as with the Albertsons food row with a variety of vendors. Rods of Ages will host a swap meet from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. with spaces costing $15. For more information on the swap meet contact Dave or Terry at (208) 891-0204. Cruise shirts will be available for $10. For more information on any of the events taking place during the 21st Annual A&W Cruise Night, contact the Payette Chamber of Commerce (208) 642- 2362.
