Roy J. Kondo, D.D.S., died on Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, surrounded by his family, in Malone, Wis. Dr. Kondo was born in Brighton, Colo., on Feb. 10, 1919. He graduated from Gresham High School in Oregon.
Dr. Kondo was attending dental school at the University of Oregon at the outbreak of World War II. He and his family were interned at Tule Lake, Calif. He resumed his dental education at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, where he received his D.D.S. degree. Subsequently, Dr. Kondo spent 18 months as a resident at the Guggenheim Dental Clinic in New York City and a year of residency at the Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
He entered the Army’s Dental Corps at Fort Lewis, Wash., where he attained the rank of captain.
In 1949, Dr. Kondo opened his dental office in Ontario, where he practiced for 48 years. Always keen to stay abreast of the latest in his field, he avidly pursued continuing education, earning his master’s degree from the Academy of General Dentistry.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ken and June Kondo, of Jamieson, Ore., and Nampa, Idaho; a sister, Mary Wakabayashi, of Palo Alto and El Cajon, Calif.; John Kondo, of Cupertino, Calif.; and Oscar Kondo, of Nampa, Idaho. He is survived by his wife of nearly 57 years, Midori Kondo; his brother, Henry Kondo, of Nampa, Idaho; a sister, Helen Okai, of Nyssa, Ore.; a daughter, Dr. Dorinne Kondo, of Los Angeles, Calif.; a son, Dr. Jeffery Kondo, and daughter-in-law, Marnie Kondo, of Malone, Wis.; and three grandsons, Brandon, Alex and Ethan Kondo.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, at the United Community Methodist Church in Ontario.
