NAMPA—Joseph Bolin and Tony Lopez netted a pair of goals apiece, and teammate Pepe Hernandez added two assists to lead the defending 3A state champion Payette Pirates to a 5-2 victory over Columbia High School in non-league boys soccer action Saturday in Nampa.
Payette head coach Shaun Bolin praised the play of midfielders Jose Hernandez and Santiago Hernandez.
"We worked as a team and we win as a team,” he said.
On a hot afternoon, the Pirates put the heat to the Wildcats and scored in the first 10 minutes of action on a goal by the sophomore Bolin.
At the 32-minute mark, Lopez gave Payette a 2-0 advantage, as he took a cross from Evan Hershey and deposited his shot in the back of the net.
Columbia broke its scoreless drought right before the end of the half on soft shot over the arms of goalkeeper Austin Waynetska and the score was 2-1 at the break.
Eight minutes into the second half, Lopez added another acrobatic tally with a header on a cross from Hernandez to make the score 3-1.
Just 20 minutes later, Hernandez put the Pirates up 4-1 on a direct kick, after the Columbia keeper inadvertently stepped outside the penalty box.
After a score by Columbia made the count 4-2, Bolin put the icing on the cake with a goal on an assist from Hernandez.
“I’d like to give kudos to our defense,” coach Bolin said after the game. “They played 100 percent better today than last week against Fruitland and Homedale. (Keeper) Austin Waynetska had some key saves in the game, too. They all did a great job.”
Payette (1-0 overall) kicks off league action at 4 p.m. Thursday against Homedale.
