Timberline Lodge gets stimulus cash
PORTLAND (AP) — Mound Hood National Forest is getting $4.25 million in federal stimulus money to make improvements at Timberline Lodge.
The work includes a new paint job, window replacement, chimney restoration, the replacement of the emergency power generator, improvements to the water supply system and the construction of a climber’s register and welcome plaza,
The work will employ contractors, painters, carpenters, electricians, masons, pipe fitters, roofers, and road construction crews.
Forest officials said this week that some of the jobs should begin within 90 days and continue for a year.
Timberline Lodge was created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression.
Girl kidnapped from Woodburn home
WOODBURN (AP) — Willamette Valley police are searching for a 14-year-old girl kidnapped from her Woodburn home.
Woodburn Police Sgt. John Mikkola says Elvia Morales was home with her 17-year-old cousin when a young man came to the house Wednesday and took her away.
The 17-year-old tried to intervene, but was pushed aside.
Mikkola says the suspect is Juan Martinez-Martinez, someone who used to work with the girl’s father.
Detectives believe the pair might be in California.
Western Dems begin meetings in N. Idaho
WORLEY (AP) — Democrats from around the West are getting ready to gather in northern Idaho for four days of planning and strategy.
The Democratic National Committee’s Western Regional Conference starts Thursday and runs through Sunday, with most of the meetings scheduled for the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort and Hotel.
The convention marks the first time Democratic delegates from the 13 western states have convened in Idaho.
Organizers say the conference will focus on some key policy issues, including alternative energy, health care reform, the economy and education.
Idaho Democratic Party vice chairwoman Jeanne Buell says the event provides an opportunity for state Democrats to develop and get training and insight on key issues.
Klamath Falls brawl sends 16 into police custody
KLAMATH FALLS, (AP) — Klamath Falls police took 16 people into custody following a fight in an alley off East Main Street.
Police say responding officers witnessed the teenagers brawling late Wednesday afternoon and were able to separate most of the fighters.
One brawler couldn’t be controlled and an officer used a stun gun to subdue him. Police officer Mike Anderson says the brawl began as a prearranged fight between two boys.Nine juveniles were arrested.
