Officials search for leads in arson case

VALE — Local authorities are seeking information regarding the individual or individuals who ignited eight fires in the Vale area Monday — on Rhinehart Butte, east of town, along Lytle Boulevard, south of town, and in the area of Country View Golf Course, between Vale and Cairo Junction.

“They are all arson,” United States Bureau of Land Management Vale District Public Information Officer Mark Wilkening said.

Four of the blazes were on BLM land and four were on private land.

“All of them were set from a paved road,” he said.

Wikening said officials believe that someone saw something or someone suspicious.

“We need the public’s assistance,” he said.

Another concern, Wilkening said, is that people flooded the 911 dispatch with reports about the fire on Rhinehart Butte, to the extent no calls about the other fires could get through.

Anyone with information is asked to call Wilkening at (541) 473 6218. BLM is the lead agency on the investigation, he said.

In addition, four fires of suspicious origin were started in the Huntington area shortly after midnight Monday morning. Fires two and three burned together and covered about 59 acres, and the fourth burned 20 to 30 acres. All were controlled by the BLM or fire departments, he said, and are under investigation.

" There are bad apples in every single aspect of life. I hope when this is all said and done it does not turn out to be one of those bad apples. Firemen in our small community are mostly volunteers whom are paid little, if any to help protect & save our property, sometimes our lives. I just want to take a minute and thank them for all they do! "

" WG is right on. Take a look at the case a few years back in Weiser where the Weiser Rural firefighter was convicted of setting fires for the purpose of making money and being the "hero". He was the one that actually called in and reported a few of the fires he set. So, a firefighter setting these fires IS NOT out of the question. To any arson investigator, it IS one of the first things they look at. Firefighters can be arsonists the same as police officers can be criminals. "

" Not really and idiot. Years ago, I worked with a fireman from Payette who actually set a fire at work and got caught. Fortunately damage was minimal and he got terminated.

From that day his last name became "Arson"!

Firefighters setting fires is not as far fetched as some think "

" look at who would benefit from the blazes? Fire fighters...that's my bet. Nothing like a litte job security, right? "
