Anna M. Schlupe ‘Annie’
Jan. 19, 1928-July 17, 2009

Vale

Anna M. (Annie) Schlupe, age 81, of Vale, Ore., passed away Friday, July 17, 2009, at a Boise hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at Valley View Cemetery.

Annie was born in Beverwijk, The Netherlands, on Jan. 19, 1928, to Henricus and Anna Mary Bishop (Bisschop). She immigrated with her family to Vale, Ore., in 1929. She attended Vale schools and graduated from high school in 1946, which is now the current Vale Middle School. She married Benny Schlupe, of Harper, Ore., on Nov. 1, 1946. They lived west of Vale on 40 acres that they took out of sagebrush and turned into farm ground. With the help of family and neighbors, they built a new house on the property. Annie and Benny raised two children at the ranch until 1960, when they moved into town at the house Annie lived for 49 years. Annie loved to garden and made beautiful quilts. She was well known for making quilts for her family and friends. She always raised a garden so she could share the fruits of her harvest with family and friends, including homemade jams and pickled beets.

One of her special enjoyments was traveling to Arizona for the winter months with her husband, Benny, and friends, Shamy and Irma Johnson. After Benny passed away in 1995, she continued her trips to Arizona. She became involved with friends who encouraged her to play her harmonica during some of their jam sessions.

As the years passed, she became a regular member of the Oregon Old Time Fiddlers Association. She played with them in Arizona in the winter and traveled to many places in Oregon, including Burns, Sumpter and LaPine during her summer months. She made many wonderful new friends through her music and entertained lots of people with her unique ability on the harmonica.

Annie is survived by her two children, Toni Ann, and husband, Ted Evans, and B.H. “Topper,” and wife, Sharon Schlupe, all of Vale; seven grandchildren, Bob and Sarah Evans, Caldwell, Idaho, Angie and Clark Dean, Vale, Steve and Kim Evans, Kuna, Idaho,  Caitlin, Amanda, Aidan and Connelly Schlupe, Vale; five great-grandchildren, Robert, Abbi and Jessica Evans and Jaylee and Marni Evans.  Also her dear friend, traveling companion and fellow musician, Hollis Real, Redmond. She is also survived by her siblings, Hank and Judy Bishop, Ontario, Ore., and Frank Bishop, Baker City, Ore., and numerous nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Benny, and brother, John Bishop.

Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society or any charitable organization of your choice in care of Lienkaemper Chapel, PO Box 970, Ontario, OR  97914.
