Russ Wright (right) talks with a few of his players about the game of baseball. Wright has demonstrated all season the importance of coaching his athletes in every situation, and that philosophy has shown on the field as his team, the Treasure Valley ‘A’ Stars, earned the top seed in the upcoming West Division district tournament which begins today in Fruitland. |
Fruitland—The West Division of the American Legion single A league came down to one game for the Stars, the season finale against Emmett.
Luckily, the Stars pulled out the 12-10 win which vaulted them to the to No. 1 seed in this weekend’s West Division district tournament with a 14-4 division record. Emmett was the No. 2 seed with a record of 13-5.
The tournament begins today at 4 p.m. with No. 8 Middleton (7-11) taking on the No. 9-seeded Meridian (6-12). The Stars will pay close attention to this game as they will play the winner at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Despite sweeping both of these teams this year in regular season play, Stars head coach Russ Wright is not taking any chances and will send one of his best arms to the mound in Miguel Rios.
“He (Rios) came off his last outing with no soreness and is ready to work,” Wright said.
In the late game Friday, the No. 7 seed Vallivue (8-10) will take on the No. 10-seeded Columbia (0-18), and the winner of the that game will hit the diamond at 4 p.m. Saturday against Emmett.
The rest of the field matches up with No. 4 Nampa (11-7) trading pitches with No. 5 Caldwell (10-6) at 10 a.m. Saturday and No. 3 Eagle (16-6) taking on No. 6 Rocky Mountain (9-9) at 1 p.m.
The Stars ended their regular season with a confidence-building, key 12-10 win over Emmett on Wednesday.
