Idaho officials unhappy with border policy

BOISE (AP) — Officials from the United States and Canada say that American northern border policy, shaped by terrorism concerns and Mexican border issues, is negatively impacting Pacific Northwest communities.

‘‘We’re trying to decide what to do with the Canadian border based on what we do with the Mexican border,’’ Idaho Rep. George Eskridge, said during a discussion Monday at the annual summit of the Pacific Northwest Economic Region. ‘‘I think that’s wrong, because we’ve got different problems.’’

Border policy is just one topic on the agenda at the meeting this week in Boise, attended by about 500 government officials, policy experts and business leaders from the U.S. and Canada. Leaders also will delve into cross-border issues like energy, agriculture and economic development.

But Monday’s session focused on the pros and cons of the existing border policy.

Donald Alper, a Western Washington University political scientist and director of the Border Policy Research Institute, said his research shows a significant decline in cross-border travel since tighter security measures were imposed after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

He also said communities that had developed close cross-border cultures have seen those relationships erode as the U.S. limited access.

‘‘My personal view is it’s probably ludicrous that we’re securitizing the border with Canada to the point that we are,’’ said Alper.

Montana Rep. Julie French, D-Scobey, said the federal government is pouring $15 million in economic stimulus funds into upgrading a border crossing in her district that caters to about 10 cars a day,

‘‘They need to be updated, yes. Fifteen million? No. I mean, common sense is what is lacking for all of this,’’ she said.

" Yeah, put a wall up with a small door.

You can either be stupid and try and climb the wall and get shot, or you can respectfully and calmly walk through the door, identify yourself, state your reason for entering the country, blah blah blah.

And like ALL other countries in this world, if we don't like your answers or suspect you for whatever reason we please that you are a danger to the people of this nation, we turn your butt around and you go back to Mexico. If you decide to at that point become stupid and try and breach our border, well this is also something we will shoot you for.

No other country puts up with crap from visitors, why do we? I remember a few years back a young man getting is butt beat ruthlessly for vandalism in a foreign country. I bet he never tried that crap again. Think if we only had to say it once, instead of just paying out the nose in taxes that are used to support the laziness of some border jumper that popped out a kid. We have our own people to take care of, why do we have to help everyone else when we can't even help ourselves? Nothing wrong with helping, but you better look out for number one because no one else ever will.

All this security that we the people are constantly being watched and monitored, yet our borders are so friggin open that it's pathetic.

It's like our government wants all this garbage crossing our borders.

I'd volunteer to sit in a tower every week....just give me a gun with a scope on it, lol. "

" The age-old pesky U.S.-Mexico border problem has taxed the resources of both countries, led to long lists of injustices, and appears to be heading only for worse troubles in the future. Guess what? The border problem can never be solved. Why? Because the border IS the problem! It's time for a paradigm change.

Never fear, a satisfying, comprehensive solution is within reach: the Megamerge Dissolution Solution. Simply dissolve the border along with the failed Mexican government, and megamerge the two countries under U.S. law, with mass free 2-way migration eventually equalizing the development and opportunities permanently, with justice and without racism, and without threatening U.S. sovereignty or basic principles.

Take the time to read my article describing a new policy for U.S.-Mexico relations, which can also be applied to U.S.-Canada relations, by Googling "Megamerge Dissolution Solution". "
