From the Editor's Desk: Something to remember this place by

We were sitting in a green 1962 Jeep pickup in my parents’ driveway when my good friend Tim peered across the cab at the corner.

“I’m going to take one of those signs before I leave,” he said.

I followed his gaze. Just down the road, at the corner near Fruitdale and Chandler roads stood a single wood pole with narrow, green and white signs at the top pointing in different directions.

“Now why the hell would you do that?” I remember asking.

Tim only smiled.

“Because I want something to remember this place by,” he said.

It was early September 1985. Tim was, and is, a friend of mine since I was 6 or 7. He was preparing to leave for the University of Oregon. I  had another year of high school. I had just finished cutting wheat and was back in school. Tim’s time was up at La Grande High.

" Hemingway, why aren't you on the Argus staff...lets see to the point, complete sentence, naw you are to smart to write for them. Thanks for the great finish. Made my day! "

" Sure it's a nifty article, about theft. Friendship be blipped, you're condoning an illegal act.
For the bits you're offering us, I pay an online subscription to an out of area paper, maybe you should consider that. And that I can purchase a print edition of much bigger, much better, more informative papers for less than I'd pay for this rag. Then again, consider the area. "

" So Tim stole the sign, was arrested and got a cool tattoo in jail now he will always have something to remember that place by. The End No need to buy the paper "

" You know, seeing how the economy is down and all and people are trying to figure out a way to get money flowing again....might just help. I know they charge for advertising, but something has to give somewhere and this small gesture will not only help them find stories to fill up the space, but it gives a good overall outlook on the paper for doing such a thing.

You want to win the hearts of your readers, then be heartfelt. People have read the bad/sad stories for decades....we are sick of it. I want to pick up the paper and see a very small section of the "bad", but I want to see more "little sally stories" or a new business like that kids carpet cleaning business in Nyssa...things that a small community needs. If we want the "bad" we can turn on the tv or search the internet as it is flooded with bad, I don't want to read about it as well in my local paper. i want to know what the kids are doing in school, more summer sports coverage of our elite baseball/softball players, farmers hitting it big with a good yield, a community member beating cancer, etc. you know, stories that are uplifting and inspire the rest of the community.

Oregon is awaiting the signature of our Governor to legalize hemp on a state level for industrial production, AND NO MENTION WHATSOEVER IN THE ARGUS!!! This is a farming communnity, and NOT A WORD has been mentioned. People, this is big, and the Argus needs to get on top of good things like this. Sure, it will still be illegal on a federal level (what a joke) but for a farming community, you'd think that this would of atleast been mentioned, considering its multi-billion dollar potentials if the feds lift their ban on hemp and allow farmers to produce it again, like many of our first presidents did, or mention that it was re-legalized in during WWII with the whole "Hemp for Freedom" push by our own federal government. Things that you would think that a farming community would be on top of. "

" Really life long Malheur resident?? Hum, I just pulled up the Oregonian, Idhao Statesman, Newsweek and New York Times papers and did not see a charge for these. Maybe you could give us an example of some paper that charges?? Ever think that it actually benifits a paper to also print on line? A chance to show off what they have and maybe gain MORE readers who will subscribe? My entire point is that printing just a piece of an article to try to entice people to purchase the paper is going to do nothing but make people mad. Im pretty sure I am correct about this but if Im out of line then I apologize. Like I said, I enjoy reading the paper when Im home also. "

" You should feel fortunate that you can even get on the Argus website. You must pay to read the paper online on alot of papers nationwide. Give someone an inch and they will take a mile. The paper as good or bad as your prospective is, is in the business to make money. Just as you or your boss is.... "

leftbychoice wrote on Jul 13, 2009 8:59 AM:

" FYI - I would pay for an online subscription were it available and you got the full text of the paper online. "

" To The freeloaders are crying: Seriously are you ten years old or just an idiot? If the Argus or any other paper does not want to advertise (yes that is what they are doing) then dont put anything on line. If they want to print just some articles so be it, but to print half or a small part of an article and then go on to tell you if you want the entire story go buy a paper is ridiculous. I happen to enjoy reading articles on line and occassionally entering a blog. I also enjoy reading the paper when Im at home. Ever try looking at both sides of an issue before opening your hole? I think YOU should shut your mouth and go on with whatever business it is you do. "

" i pay for my subscription, and the papers just sit on my porch, turning brown. i prefer to red my news online.

i can totally understand the business reasons for this cute new change, but it would be nice if the paper - like bigger papers doing the same thing - would create a 'subscriber login' option so those of us who are paying to kill trees can view full articles online too. "

The freeloaders are crying wrote on Jul 12, 2009 7:42 AM:

" Looks like the mouthbreathers are all upset now, because the paper wants to put a premium on their printed product and they can no longer get everything for free. I can't understand why the paper would want people to subscribe. Oh wait, is it because they too are a business trying to make money? What a hard concept to understand.
Hey all you mouthbreathers if you want to finish reading the stories, then subscribe. If you don't, then shut up and go about your business. Just because you have the ability to type doesn't mean you always have to use it. "

Poor Business wrote on Jul 12, 2009 6:48 AM:

" Readership is down and papers are not selling at the inflated cost. Now are trying to dangle the carrot to sell papers. What a joke. Is this Caldwell's idea or Dillon's? It is a poor business decision regardless of who's idea it is. The parent company will be a letter on this idiotic idea and maybe they will step in a clean house and get a real management team in there and papers will again start selling.Until then your paper will continue to fail. The I. E. may only be a weekly but at least it gives you the local news. "

leftbychoise wrote on Jul 11, 2009 9:39 AM:

" Hey they gotta pay that new publisher's salary somehow. At 50 cents a paper that won't pay his gas from Nampa to Ontario every day. "

Joe wrote on Jul 10, 2009 7:13 PM:

" Huh, sounds like...

One: You aren't selling papers and this is your last ditch effort.

Two: Your friend stole a road sign, which is a felony.

Next they will start making us prepay for a log in name to access this site, lol. "

NO KIDDING wrote on Jul 10, 2009 7:23 AM:

" I like the way they update the blogs now also. Maybe once a day if they feel like it. This is becoming more of a joke every day. Thanks for everything Argus. "

YEP wrote on Jul 9, 2009 8:02 AM:

" Looks like a new way of trying to get more people to buy the paper. Nice going, print a little piece of each article then tell people to go get the paper. Good marketing move here. Im sure all of us on line readers will run right out and subscribe. Thanks for giving us a heads up on this and good luck with your rocket science move. "

leftbychoice wrote on Jul 8, 2009 12:28 PM:

" Bet this was a nice story, too bad those of us who are online readers can't see it. "
