BEAVERTON—Facing 16 top teams, many of them in U-18A ranks, the Treasure Valley U-18 Field of Dreams team chalked up third-place honors at the Aloha Invitational Softball Tournament in Beaverton.

The Dreams went 1-2 in pool play action Saturday, and notched a 1-1 record in Sunday’s action.

In the semifinal round, and a championship berth at stake, the Dreams faced off against the Oregon Mystics, out off Eugene, and squandered a 5-1 fifth-inning advantage.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Mystics took advantage of three Dream errors and scratched across four unearned runs to even the total to 5-all, before scoring the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh inning on a walk-off RBI single off hard-luck starter Melissa Blackwell.

“We just had that one bad inning,” Dreams coach David Hopper said. “It was definitely a tough loss, but give the girls credit, they battled.”

The loss put the Dreams in the consolation round where they battled against Tara Hutchinson, Allison Yano and the other Field of Dreams team.

In the game, Hopper’s crew, led by Baker City hurler Tori Brown came away with the 4-2 victory and the third-place hardware.

Saturday, in pool play action, the Hopper’s Dreams walked away with a 1-2 record, losing the first game of the tournament 7-0 to the Oregon Rain, out of Portland.

The Dreams got in the win column in their next game, as Blackwell tossed a complete game and drove in Miriah Dodson with the game-winning RBI single in the international tiebreaker round to defeat Medford by a 3-2 score.

In the top half of the tie-breaker, Blackwell shut down Medford and paved the way in the next inning after Dodson was at second base to start the frame.

“She was an absolute warrior out there for us,” Hopper said of Blackwell. “She had everything working for her and our defense played a great game behind her.”

In their last pool play game, the Dreams hit the diamond against Bend’s Oregon Silver Bullets, with the Bullets taking a 10-3 decision.

“They were solid all the way around,” Hopper said of the Bullets. “They had great pitching, defense and hit well with runners in scoring position.. They just did everything right.”

In a phone interview late Monday, Hopper said he was proud of his team and noted many opposing coaches were impressed with the level of softball being played in eastern Oregon and southwest Idaho.

“Both of these teams played some good softball this weekend. There are many great athletes on both teams,” Hopper said. “Playing in a highly competitive tournament against some of the top players in the northwest, these girls were not intimidated one bit. They should all be proud, they put on a solid showing.”

Both Dreams teams hit the field again at the Boise Blast Tournament on June 26.

" There were 14 teams at this tournament. After pool play, the top 8 teams played a tournament, the bottom 6 teams played a tournament. Hopper placed 3rd among the bottom 6 teams. "

" The website is incorrect. Hopper's team beat Yano's at the Beaverton tournament... Yano's team beat Hopper's team a few weeks ago in Nampa. Both teams are full of dedicated, hard working players. Go Field of Dreams! "

" First day is pool play for seeding in the tournament held the second day. 1-2 in pool, that dictates where they'll play the next day in the tournament bracket. 1-1 in the tournament bracket, gives them third place. Typical of these four game guarantee type tourneys. "

" Sounds like someone is VERY jealous of the Hopper's. Why doesn't "ask me if i care" just go away? Nobody was asking for your opinion so get over it!!!! Hey, David and Erika keep up the good work, and continue to submit any photo you want, because there are ALOT of people who do CARE!!The whole team did an excellent job!! And to "ask me if I care" what happened, baby girl didn't make the team? Get a life!!!! You sound pretty pathetic, we all know who you are!!!! Why don't you reveal who you are so that the whole community will know how much of a coward you really are picking on a young ladies softball team. If you don't care just don't read the sports section you dumb***!!!!

Go FOD teams, I don't have a daughter playing, but I love watching them play. They are pretty awesome!!! "

" there is nothing wrong with Hopper tooting his own horn when things go well, just as long as he reports in when things are going South as well and is he playing pocket pool in the picture? "

" Seriously? To "ask me if I care", you apparently care a great deal. You care enough to read the stories, and then respond in a childish, spiteful way. I would venture a bet that you participated at some time, in some way, to some type of competition, and perhaps you didn't place first - weren't you still proud of yourself, and weren't others proud of you as well? If not, that is truly sad.

Perhaps you are the same “blogger” who referred to these very same girls as “spoiled princesses, who come from rich parents” in another blog session. You obviously don’t know anything about these girls, this sport, or what it takes to be a good coach.

I’m sure these girls worked hard for their 3rd place win, and while that may seem too insignificant to you, I’ll bet there were a lot of happy girls, and very proud parents. Sure, a 1st place win would have been wonderful, but are you implying that they should be ashamed of "only coming in 3rd"? I hope that is not what you are instilling in your children, if you have any, and if you were raised to believe that anything less than 1st is irrelevant, I feel very sorry for you.

Fastpitch softball is a highly competitive, very grueling, tough, dirty, sometimes heart-breaking sport, but in looking at these girls, and reading about who they play against, and where they travel to play, I say “Good Job” girls. There are many of us who support you, are very proud of what you have accomplished, and look forward to reading many more stories about you, whether it be about a 1st place finish, or not placing at all. "
