Ontario-A police vehicle damaged in a crash Tuesday night at the intersection of Southwest Third Avenue and Southwest Third Street in Ontario is still out of commission, even as the Oregon State Police work to piece together what happened and find out who was at fault to pay damages.
OSP Sgt. Jason Reese said OPD officer Tomas Elizondo was moving through the uncontrolled intersection at 7:03 p.m. in response to a report of a fight when the 2008 Dodge Charger hit another vehicle.
OPD Capt. Mark Alexander said the police vehicle was going northbound on Southwest Third Street with the other vehicle, a 1995 Kia Sephia, traveling east on Southwest Third Avenue. Reese said the police vehicle had its overhead lights on but did not have the siren activated.
The vehicle, a 1995 Kia Sephia, was operated by a 16-year-old Ontario female and was struck on the right rear passenger side.
“If everything was as it should be, Elizondo had the right of way,” Kee said.
Alexander said the officer and one of the occupants of the vehicle were taken to Holy Rosary Medical Center. Alexander said both had minor injuries and have since been released.
Kee said just over $13,000 in damage was done to the Charger, which cost $22,470 and was purchased last year. The Oregon State Police were asked to investigate the crash by the Ontario Police Department.
Reese said Sr. Trooper Scott Skinner, crash reconstructionist, is investigating the crash with assistance from another trooper.
At the Ontario City Council work session Thursday afternoon, Kee said OSP normally only reconstructs accidents when there is a fatality.
Kee said the other driver did have insurance and that he hoped that insurance would pay for repairs to the car or a replacement car.
At the meeting, Ontario City Council member David Sullivan said uncontrolled intersections are dangerous.
“Of course it had to be one of the new ones,” Ontario Mayor Joe Dominick said Thursday afternoon.
In a phone interview Friday, Kee said he believed the car would soon be paid off.
“I believe we have one more lease payment left on it,” Kee said.
Kee said he saw the vehicle and that the front end was “crunched in”, but that he did not know the extent of the damage other than the cost to repair it.
Reese said anyone who witnessed the accident that has not already given a statement should call OSP at 889-6469.
