Lady Pirates send off seniors with 12-5 win over Columbia
Hershey, Bond and King honored before game

Payette—On senior night in Payette, the Lady Pirates made sure to give their seniors a good send off with a 12-5 win over Columbia in a non-conference softball game Monday.

Senior Mary Hershey went the distance for Payette giving up five runs on five hits while striking out two and walking four.

Payette head coach Duane Higley said Hershey struggled early in the game but settled in and pitched solid over the last four innings of play.

“Seniors Shelbi King and Lexi Bond both played solid in the win.” Higley added.

Higley was happy with offensive aggressiveness his team showed.

“The team really came out hitting tonight,” Higley said. “The first inning, they were shots right at people, but then the balls starting falling in the gaps and we started scoring.”

Columbia jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in the both the top of the first and second innings.

However, Payette answered with two runs in the bottom of the second inning to cut the lead in half at 4-2.

Columbia came back with another run in the top of the third inning to extend its lead to 5-2.

Not wanting to disappoint the seniors, the Pirate offense got busy in the home half of the third inning with five runs and the lead at 7-5.

From that point on, Hershey stepped up and shut down Columbia.

Payette added four more runs in the fourth inning and scored its final run in the sixth inning for the final tally.

“It was great to see the seniors have a great night tonight,” Higley said.

Payette travels to McCall today for a Snake River Valley Conference game.

The New Plymouth Lady Pilgrim softball team improved its overall record to 17-3 with an 8-1 win over Weiser in a non-conference softball matchup Monday in Weiser.

Pilgrim hurler Whitney Hodges improved her season record to 14-3, as she went the distance striking out 10 and walking two.

New Plymouth scored its first run in the top of the first inning for a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the third inning, the Lady Pilgrims added two more runs, along with their fourth run of the game which they scored in the fourth inning.

Weiser plated its first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning to avoid the shutout loss.

In New Plymouth’s final at-bat, the Lady Pilgrims pushed four more runs across the plate for the final margin.

New Plymouth’s Maddie Cutts was the only Lady Pilgrim with multiple hits and Anna Pittman led the team with two RBIs.

New Plymouth will be in action today at 5 p.m. with a road trip to Marsing, then turns around and host Melba at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Weiser will travel to Baker for a doubleheader today and wrap up its regular season against Parma on Thursday.

Jenny Yano fanned nine, walked one and allowed three hits to lead the Ontario softball team to its fourth win in the last five games after Monday’s 3-2 victory over Nampa in non-league softball action Monday in Nampa.

Yano, sister Allison Yano and Katie Hendon drove in the three Tigers runs, as they pounded out 10 hits.

Jordan Barnett led the offensive charge with two of the hits.

Ontario, which has a 1-5 Greater Oregon league record thus far, hosts No. 9 ranked La Grande Friday for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.

La Grande is coming off a sweep of Mac-Hi Friday, where they posted a 25-2 scoring margin.
