Game 2 Nyssa 16, Umatilla 2
In Umatilla, Nyssa’s varsity softball team kicked off Eastern Oregon League play in style with a two-game sweep over Umatilla Saturday in Umatilla.
“Every single person contributed something to the wins today and that’s what I am looking for,” Nyssa head coach Tracy Cleaver said. “Any time you start league with some notches in the win column, it is an energy-builder.”
In the opener, the Bulldogs got off to a good start with six runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back, as they cruised to a 13-0 mercy-rule win.
Noelle Burtlow went five innings and struck out six to pick up her second win of the season.
The Bulldogs notched six hits and received 13 free passes in the first game, and offensively, were led by Angela Mitchell, who went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and Tiffany Wentz went 1-for-1 with three walks and two runs scored.
In the nightcap, Wentz and Colsie Froerer tallied three hits apiece, and Kim Pett scored three runs to lead Nyssa to a lopsided 16-2 win and the sweep.
Becky Hernandez went the distance and fanned five to pick up her fourth win of the season.
Nyssa (6-7 overall, 2-0 league) travels to New Plymouth for a non-league tilt starting at 5 p.m. Monday.
