Oregon Cattlemen’s Association seeks applicants

The Oregon Cattlemen’s Association is seeking applications for an individual to attend the 2009 Young Cattlemen’s Conference May 28 through June 4.
Applicants must be between the ages of 25 and 50 and be a member of the Oregon Cattlemen’s Association and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.
The conference, now in its 29th year, is an educational tour designed to develop leadership qualities in young cattlemen and expose them to all aspects of the beef industry.
The OCA sponsorship covers travel, hotel and meal expenses during the tour, which begins in Denver and ends in Washington, D.C., but does not include the airfare from home to Denver and from Washington, D.C., to home.
“We try to send someone at least every other year because we’ve found that this investment in a young, up-and-coming leader pays off for our industry as a whole,” OCA President Bill Moore said.
Past participants include Mark Meyer, Pleasant Hill, Kay Teisl, Woodburn, Fred John Livingston, Long Creek, and Ken Read, Culver.
The tour helps these young leaders understand all areas of the cattle industry ranging from industry structure to issues management, from production research to marketing.
The tour will begin in Denver with a comprehensive overview of the cattle industry.
The group will then travel to western Kansas in order to visit various cattle-producing operations that are in the area.
From there, the group will travel to Sioux City, Neb., to tour Tyson Fresh Meats, one of the largest beef packing and processing plants in the world.
In Chicago, the group will visit the Chicago Board of Trade and the Bruss Company, a large meat purveyor.
The participants will then travel to the nation’s capital. Here they will get a chance to meet with their respective congressmen and senators.
In addition, the group will also visit with a number of regulatory agencies that make decisions affecting agriculture.
