Nyssa man pleads in gang shoot-out case

Vale — A Nyssa man pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with the August gang-related shoot-out and death of an Ontario man Wednesday in Malheur County Circuit Court.
Oscar Garcia III, 23, pleaded guilty to first degree manslaughter in the death of Rudy Mata, 25, Ontario, at the Fair View Apartments. Garcia III originally faced charges of murder, attempted murder and felon in possession of a firearm in the incident. Garcia III also pleaded guilty to assault in the first degree in connection with the injuries to Mata’s brother Gonzalo Mata, 26.
Rudy Mata, 25, Ontario, was shot at the apartment complex situated at 555 N.W. Ninth St. in Ontario and later died at Holy Rosary Medical of gunshots wounds to the chest.
A second man, Armando Torres Jr., 25, Ontario, pleaded guilty to one count of assault in the first degree in connection with Gonzalo Mata’s injuries. A grand jury indicted Torres on one count of murder, one count of attempted murder, two counts of conspiracy to commit murder and one count of felon in possession of a firearm in August.
Both will be sentenced Jan. 27.
In other Malheur County court news:
Two men connected with the stabbing of an Ontario man had their plea hearings postponed at the request of their attorneys Wednesday morning.
Rogue Martinez, 22, Caldwell, is now set to enter his plea at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 2. Adan Gonzalez, 20, Ontario, is slated to enter his plea on Jan. 27.
Martinez and Gonzalez were both arraigned on two charges of assault in the second degree, two counts of attempted assault in the second degree, kidnapping in the second degree, burglary in the first degree and conspiracy to commit burglary in the first degree. These charges came about after police say they, as well as six other individuals, broke into an apartment at a complex situated at 675 N.W. First St. in Ontario and attacked a 26-year-old Ontario man who lived there. Ontario Police Department Capt. Mark Alexander said a piece of wood and a knife were used in the attack, which also injured a 19-year-old Ontario man.
