Nyssa defeats Cole Valley at Qwest Arena

Argus Observer Sports Staff

BOISE — A few strange events played out during the Nyssa basketball game Friday afternoon, including a power outage, a key injury and playing the game with an NBA length 3-point line.

Still, the Bulldogs were able to come away with a 50-38 nonconference victory over Cole Valley Christian, at Qwest Arena in Boise.

On the first play of the game, a Cole Valley player was fouled while attempting a lay-in, and landed awkwardly, breaking his wrist in the proccess.

Later in the game, with Nyssa leading by nine, and 2:06 left in the third quarter, the power outage started and created  a 30-minute delay in play, while the rest of the contest was timed on a stop watch, and the score was posted with people holding up papers with the numbers on it.

“There was a weird flow to the game,” Nyssa head coach Gabe Fuentes said. “It was a great venue, great for the kids.”

Playing on a court generally used for the Idaho Stampede, of the NBA D-League, the 3-point line was further back than the players were used to, even though that didn’t slow down the attempts.

Each team only recorded one 3-pointer in the contest.

Seth Glenn and Jeramiah Leos each scored 11 points for the Bulldogs in the win, while Leos and Cole Froerer each grabbed 10 rebounds. Carter Spear recorded seven assists in the contest.

Cole Valley was led by Allen Westendorf with 11 points.

Nyssa (5-3 overall) will play host to Parma Tuesday in nonleague action.

Girls basketball

Fruitland 38, Columbia 32

In Nampa, the Fruitland girls basketball team improved to 7-3 with a 38-32 win over Columbia High School Saturday.

The game began with both squads struggling to score as they combined for 10 first-quarter points, and Fruitland leading 6-4. Fruitland and Columbia each added nine points in the second stanza for a 15-13 half time score.

Fruitland hit the floor in the third quarter on fire, scoring 15 points, but Columbia was close behind with 11, and to begin the final quarter, Fruitland led 30-24.

Both squads ended the game with eight points each in the fourth for the final margin.

Leading the Lady Griz were Hailey Felgenhauer with 13 points and Sarah McGinley added seven points.

Fruitland will travel to Vale Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. tip off.
